A Social Skills Program for Children
The Friendship Lab® is a 10-week, evidence-based, social skills program that helps children improve their peer relationships. Children are taught valuable skills for making and keeping friends through illustrated stories, role play and games.
Skills and Concepts:
two-way conversations
entering into play
being a good sport identifying potential friends
teasing and bullying
hosting a get-together
reputations
recognizing and dealing with emotions
perspective-taking
The program was originally written for children ages 7-12 who have average communication skills and who can read at a minimum grade 2 level. Although it has been used mostly with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, it has been used with children with other neurodevelopmental disorders as well as some without any diagnosis. It has also been used by young teens with mild intellectual disabilities.
The program is 10 weeks and intended to be delivered in one-hour sessions. Originally it was designed so that parents and children would attend concurrent groups (children in one room and parents in another). Children receive lessons delivered via slides projected on a monitor in which comic illustrations of social situations are displayed*. Following a structured lesson, they play games to practice skills. The focus of parent sessions is upon helping children to practice skills, initiate get-togethers with other children and generalize skills and concepts.
A modified version has been created for use via a virtual platform.

To deliver the program in-person a computer and monitor (or data projector) are required. There is a facilitator manual as well as workbooks for parents and children.
The program was originally written in English. It has been translated into French.
It has been translated into Chinese although this version is only available for research purposes.
The Friendship Lab® was written to be delivered by teachers, counselors, therapists, etc.
